Pan’s Labyrinth Poster advertising, illustration

“Pan’s Labyrinth” is a 2006 dark fantasy film directed by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro. The movie follows the themes of innocence, choice, manipulation of the powerless. Creatively, the film combines elements of war drama with fairy-tale like settings and creatures, told through the eyes of a young girl.

The poster features a hand lettered title with an illustration of the two main characters: the young protagonist, Ofelia, and the faun, a mythical creature inspired by Greek mythology. The winding strokes of the letters (using the Spanish title) are inspired by the free-flowing qualities of nature, another theme in the film. The border is derived both from pillar design featured as a visual motif in the movie, and the decorative covers of fairy tale novels. Decorative elements of the poster reflect the charm of childhood, while the scratchiness and rough details reflect the loss of innocence.
